Counselling for PTSD
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has become a buzzword in recent years. It is often associated with combat veterans returning from duty. It has also been found within populations of refugees and asylum seekers who escaped from conflict zones abroad. It is unsurprising to also see similar PTSD symptoms in people who have survived emotional, physical or sexual abuse.
Data collected from people around the world has indicated that over 70% of people will encounter at least one traumatic event in their life and 30% will encounter four or more. PTSD treatment is extremely important to support individuals who are having a difficult time processing traumatic events, which is not uncommon considering the tragic nature of these encounters. PTSD is generally seen in people who are struggling to return to their normal after a traumatic encounter, which can be complicated by flashbacks, panic attacks, and an overall inability to feel safe.
PTSD symptoms often overlap with symptoms of abuse and can develop into depression and anxiety over time. PTSD symptoms tend to be more specific where flashbacks, mood swings, and behavioural changes (i.e. lack of sleep, social anxiety, etc.) all revolve around the traumatic event.
